CHAPTER 32
The next evening, I met up with Sam for dinner. I knew I had to make up my mind about this trip.
âSo, can we book the trip to Door County or not?â Sam said as we were eating at Charleyâs. âWe only have that window of time in October to be able to go.â
âHow long will we be gone?â I asked shyly, taking another bite of my chicken quesadilla.
He grinned at me, knowing I had succumbed to the thought. âWe can make it a short or a long weekend. We could fly into Green Bay, but itâs a wonderful drive this time of year,â he said, trying to be accommodating. âItâs really part of the experience of the area.â
âIâll let you know for sure as soon as I talk with Sally,â I replied. I was beginning to feel uneasy.
âYou start getting busier at Thanksgiving and my mother will likely visit again, so it would be nice for us to get away before then,â he noted, continuing to eat his salad.
âYouâre right, youâre right,â I said, frustrated. It was like someone was trying to make me take medicine because it was best for me. We dropped the subject, but I knew Sam was going to win this battle. I had to admit, it sounded wonderful. It would be a lovely drive, but if I went, I preferred to fly.
When I got home, Nancy had a wonderful thank you message on my phone. I had sent her a small pair of vintage flowerpots as a congratulations gift. One was a pink elephant and the other was blue. She loved older things as much as I.
Sam quietly went on up to our bedroom early to read, so I went to call Sally at home. I had to do it while this dilemma of the trip was on my mind.
âAnything wrong?â answered Sally at the other end of the line.
âNo, silly,â I said with a snicker. âDidnât mean to call this late, but Sam and I had a conversation at dinner about the two of us going to Door County near the last of this month. We wouldnât be gone long, but I wanted to discuss it with you first.â
âSo, whatâs the problem? And whoâs the boss here, Miss Anne?â she coyly asked.
I smiled, knowing it sounded rather silly. âWell, there are plenty of reasons not to go, but Iâm under pressure to go, Iâm afraid.â
âWell, it sounds like pretty nice pressure, if you ask me,â she teased. âItâs no big deal, Anne. Thatâs what you have me for.â She was always so confident and positive. âAbbey was just saying sheâd like more hours, and if we really have to, we can use Sue for a Saturday morning. I wish I had someone who wanted to swish me away for a vacation.â
I laughed, wishing she did too!
So, speaking of wishes, whatâs up with Tim?â I boldly asked.
âThe good news is he has called a couple of times to talk, however, itâs usually to pump me for information about Paige.
