CHAPTER 32

The next evening, I met up with Sam for dinner. I knew I had to make up my mind about this trip.

“So, can we book the trip to Door County or not?” Sam said as we were eating at Charley’s. “We only have that window of time in October to be able to go.”

“How long will we be gone?” I asked shyly, taking another bite of my chicken quesadilla.

He grinned at me, knowing I had succumbed to the thought. “We can make it a short or a long weekend. We could fly into Green Bay, but it’s a wonderful drive this time of year,” he said, trying to be accommodating. “It’s really part of the experience of the area.”

“I’ll let you know for sure as soon as I talk with Sally,” I replied. I was beginning to feel uneasy.

“You start getting busier at Thanksgiving and my mother will likely visit again, so it would be nice for us to get away before then,” he noted, continuing to eat his salad.

“You’re right, you’re right,” I said, frustrated. It was like someone was trying to make me take medicine because it was best for me. We dropped the subject, but I knew Sam was going to win this battle. I had to admit, it sounded wonderful. It would be a lovely drive, but if I went, I preferred to fly.

When I got home, Nancy had a wonderful thank you message on my phone. I had sent her a small pair of vintage flowerpots as a congratulations gift. One was a pink elephant and the other was blue. She loved older things as much as I.

Sam quietly went on up to our bedroom early to read, so I went to call Sally at home. I had to do it while this dilemma of the trip was on my mind.

“Anything wrong?” answered Sally at the other end of the line.

“No, silly,” I said with a snicker. “Didn’t mean to call this late, but Sam and I had a conversation at dinner about the two of us going to Door County near the last of this month. We wouldn’t be gone long, but I wanted to discuss it with you first.”

“So, what’s the problem? And who’s the boss here, Miss Anne?” she coyly asked.

I smiled, knowing it sounded rather silly. “Well, there are plenty of reasons not to go, but I’m under pressure to go, I’m afraid.”

“Well, it sounds like pretty nice pressure, if you ask me,” she teased. “It’s no big deal, Anne. That’s what you have me for.” She was always so confident and positive. “Abbey was just saying she’d like more hours, and if we really have to, we can use Sue for a Saturday morning. I wish I had someone who wanted to swish me away for a vacation.”

I laughed, wishing she did too!

So, speaking of wishes, what’s up with Tim?” I boldly asked.

“The good news is he has called a couple of times to talk, however, it’s usually to pump me for information about Paige.
